Einstein Tile - A geometric shape that does not repeat itself when tiled

 

 Recently discovered, the "Einstein Tile" can be assembled into tiles that never repeat.   This is the first of its kind!

 

 Normally tiles have some kind of repeat (imagine repeating squares and so on) but with this tile you can layout them out rotated and flipped to make a design that never repeats!

 When people tile their floors, they tend to use simple geometric shapes that lend themselves to repeating patterns, such as squares or triangles. Sometimes though, people want patterns that do not repeat but that represents a challenge if the same types of shape are used. In this new effort, the research team has discovered a single geometric shape that if used for tiling, will not produce repeating patterns.

These are a step beyond the well known "Penrose tiles" which needed two different shapes to make a non-repeating pattern.

 

 Notably, the name comes from the phrase "Ein Stein" or "one stone" in German, not from the famous physicist.
